Felix Geisendörfer has announced an Ajax file upload progress bar which integrates with CakePHP. The solution looks very promising, but check it out yourself, there is a demo online the demo is no longer available and Felix now recommends to use a flash-based uploader (see the aforementioned article).

It should work with Apache. Do you have installed the required cgi script?
