While visiting the blog of Derick Ng I noticed in his blogroll a link to a site I wasn’t aware of: Planet CakePHP. It aggregates the feeds of around 40 CakePHP-related blogs.

Starting into the new year

As you may have noticed, the new year brought a new design for this blog :)

What will the new year bring for the CakePHP world? I think (and really hope) we will see a stable version of CakePHP 1.2, something I already expected to happen in 2007. A good point in time for the release could be during the CakeFest in February, the first gathering of (primarily US-based?) CakePHP users. And with a stable 1.2 version it is also possible that we will see the first (published) CakePHP book…

Furthermore I think the community will still grow, but the growth rate will probably decrease (last year the number of subscribers of the CakePHP Google Group doubled to around 7200 people).

Personally, I hope some of my 30-day trials in 2008 will be successful (last year I started with this approach the habit of going to bicycle (almost) daily, I became an early riser, and abandoned almost completely watching TV).

I also want to use this opportunity to thank you for reading this blog in the last year and for writing all those comments. I learned a lot from them. Thank you!

OpenID comments broken

Today, the OpenID plugin I use here on this blog suddenly stopped to work. I don’t know what caused the problem, as I didn’t change anything in the configuration. It’s strange…

Anyway, until I got this problem fixed it is not possible to use an OpenID to comment here. Sorry for this inconvenience.

Update 2007-09-08: As I wasn’t able to fix the problem and a newer version of the plugin caused also problems I decided to disable the support for OpenID comments for the moment. I hope I can bring back this functionality soon.

Ok, no big news. Just upgraded this blog to WordPress 2.1 and installed the OpenID plugin. So if you use OpenID you can leave comments by providing your OpenID. That’s it.

(Cake)PHPThrowdown

PHPThrowdown is a 24 hour coding marathon for PHP, which started yesterday. PhpNut and gwoo participate in this marathon in the category “inventory management” with an application called “Itemizr” (see some screenshots). You can follow their progress on http://cakephp.blogture.com/. Good luck to PhpNut and gwoo!

Wow, the time moves forward really fast. It is already a year since I started this blog with the post “The first post or What is CakePHP?”. Since then a lot happened in the CakePHP world:

the CakePHP Google group has grown from less then 1000 members to almost 3500 members
the average number of people in the IRC channel has grown from around 20 to 90-100
a manual has been written
the bakery was started
more than 80 projects were started on CakeForge
around 1800 tickets were created
several other CakePHP blogs/sites were started

Pretty cool!

I also want to use this opportunity to thank you for reading this blog, and for all the comments and links. That really motivates to write this blog :) Thank you.

And something I never asked yet: What do you want to read more often here, and what less? Thanks for your feedback!

A little face lifting

As you may have noticed, I did a little face lifting on my blog. I switched from a two-column layout to a three-column layout, and tweaked the CSS here and there. I also added a new archive page, where you can find all articles. If you want to compare the new design with the previous one, here is a screen shot of the previous design:

I hope the new design is better than the previous one ;-)

questions, nothing but questions

This is the title of a new blog project of mine. A blog which is reduced to the essential. That means it will contain only questions. One question per post. Nothing more. The questions will be naive, banal, confusing, critical, philosophical. A stimulus to make your own thoughts ;-)

Cakebaker joins the CakeBakery

Well, yesterday I wrote about the CakeBakery, the first german CakePHP blog, and today I already joined the CakeBakery (thanks to Dirk for the invitation). The goal is to make CakePHP more popular in the german speaking part of the world. We will see if we can reach that goal :)
