Even though the cookbook application is quite new, some translation efforts have already been started resp. are planned for several languages (you find them also in the footer of the cookbook application):

Bulgarian (bg)

Czech (cz)

Dutch (nl)

French (fr)

Portuguese (pt)

Spanish (es)

I don’t know how this translation process is intended to work, but I think some features useful for translation purposes (like versioning and a diff function) are missing in the current version of the cookbook. Of course, they are not essential in the beginning, though as the docs evolve such features will make the life of the translators easier.

Anyway, if you want to help with the translation efforts, you best contact John David Anderson (aka _psychic_): “Email me or catch me on IRC (#cakephp on freenode) to discuss any translations efforts you’d like to pitch in on.”

Update 2008-02-21: Added links to Italian and Japanese versions of the cookbook.
Update 2008-02-26: Added links to Bulgarian, Hungarian, and Polish versions of the cookbook.
Update 2008-02-29: Added link to Czech version.

It is thought to be the place for the manual of CakePHP 1.2 (and hence will replace http://tempdocs.cakephp.org when its content has been moved to the cookbook application). It is a kind of moderated wiki: you can edit the content, but those changes have to be approved before they go live.

One thing the team should improve is the speed of the application, it is really slow (and I don’t think it is my internet connection). My guess is that the menu structure slows down the application, maybe it can be cached?

The blog tutorial from the manual is probably the tutorial most use resp. used to make their first steps with CakePHP. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with CakePHP 1.2, if you follow the tutorial you will get notices and warnings. Not really a nice welcome :|

Ahsan wrote some time ago an article in which he explains how you can make the blog tutorial work with Cake 1.2. It is not a tutorial on its own, it is more a complement to the tutorial in the manual.

Yesterday, Thomas Diehl has published in his blog a “Blog tutorial for CakePHP 1.2″ trilogy (in german). In the first part he introduces some CakePHP basics. Part two is very similar to the blog tutorial from the manual. And in the third part he extends the rudimentary blog by adding comments and writing a helper. It is a good start for german-speaking newbies who want to begin directly with CakePHP 1.2.

On http://tempdocs.cakephp.org/ the first version of the CakePHP 1.2 manual is online (there exists also a PDF, <del>but I don’t know if it is the same version</del> but it is an older version). It is a work in progress, and so some stuff is not yet documented. Anyway, it may be still useful for some of you.

I haven’t read it yet, so I can’t say anything about the content. But what I am missing is a list of those people who contributed to the manual. That’s imho much more important than a list of the members of the CakePHP team (and no, I don’t expect to show up in the docs contributor list as my only contribution to the 1.2 manual was a rejected outline).

Thank you to everyone who contributed (and still contributes) to the manual!

Update 2007-09-17: The manual is now no longer available to the public, the access is password-protected. I don’t understand this move… (thanks to David Persson for mentioning it in a comment)
Update 2007-10-23: The manual has been made publicly available at http://tempdocs.cakephp.org/.

Well, the doors are open at http://bakery.cakephp.org. Over the next few days we hope everyone
will help us move the content from the wiki over to the Bakery. If you have a tutorial on the wiki,
something you wrote up on your blog, or something you have been planning to share, help us test out the Bakery.
The Code section of the Bakery is the perfect place to put your latest and greatest snippet. If you have a
component, helper, model or some other nifty code on CakeForge or your hard drive, throw it into the Code
section of the Bakery.

There is also a new bugfix release of CakePHP (1.1.8.3544) available.
